Henley Winter Series – Round 2
Round two of the Henley Winter Series which was due to take place in mid-December had to be cancelled as heavy overnight snow made it difficult for all competitors to reach the Eyot Centre and continuing snow made it impossible to keep the landing stages safe.
Heavy rain during the first week of January raised the river level and increased the flow rate putting January’s event at risk, but conditions improved in time for it to proceed.
The rescheduled event took place on Sunday 14th January when eleven full Dragonboat crews, two ten-man crews, Thames and London Wave and eight Outrigger crews totalling over three hundred paddlers took part.
Pink Champagne got the event underway and the remaining crews were sent on the 7 kilometre course at 45 second intervals.
Henley Dragons made good progress on the downstream leg catching Bristol Empire Dragons who started 45 seconds before as they approached Temple Island. There was some hard fought side by side racing as Bristol resisted the overtaking but Henley pressed home their advantage and exited the Temple Island turn ahead. By the top of the island Henley had also passed Jurassic the OC3 Outrigger crew.
On the upstream leg Henley overtook three further crews who had started ahead of them and narrowly failed to catch Raging Dragons on the finish line.
Once again Rafters headed the result sheet with a time of 31m20secs. but a brilliant effort by PRCC mens’ crew saw them home in second place overall and top outrigger with a time of 32m 31s.
Third overall were Wraysbury 33m14s followed by two more outriggers, Milton Keynes Men then Royal Canoe Club. Henley Dragons were placed sixth with 35m15s and third in the Dragon Boat class.
